The Hearts Capacity to LOVE: Reflections on Love and the Heart
I was with my beautiful mumma last night, and we found ourselves talking about love (okay…I’,m always talking about love!), its power, its depth, and its importance. We spoke about the ability to love without judgment, to embrace ourselves and others exactly as we are, and how that kind of love is the purest form of connection. It made me reflect on the incredible capacity of the human heart; not just the physical organ that keeps us alive, but the energetic heart that holds our emotions, our compassion, and our ability to give and receive love. I’m sad that we no longer hug without a reason like ‘hello’ or ‘goodbye’, or that kissing is often hidden behind closed doors, public displays of affection make people feel awkward and I can’t check in with you without needing a reason to do so. When did all this happen and why can’t I just love boundlessly (is that a word?!…it is now if not). You may not want me to do these things if your in my life, but I will anyway. Because we need more of it. That’s just me.
In Reiki, this heart energy is known as the Anahata Chakra, the fourth energy centre. It’s the bridge between our lower, survival-focused chakras and the higher, spiritual ones. When the heart is open and balanced, we can experience true empathy, joy, and unconditional love. When it’s blocked or out of balance, we may feel disconnected, lonely, or unable to fully embrace ourselves and others.
The Heart: More Than a Muscle
Most of us think of the heart simply as a biological organ. Indeed, the heart is remarkable—it beats around 100,000 times a day, pumping approximately 2,000 gallons of blood through the body daily. Its electrical system allows it to beat independently of the brain, and the heart’s rhythm can even influence our emotional state and mental clarity.
Science also tells us that the heart communicates with the brain. Through the heart-brain connection, the heart sends signals that can affect our emotions, hormone levels, and even cognitive processes. Essentially, the heart isn’t just a pump, it’s an intelligent organ capable of sensing and feeling.
But beyond the biology, the heart is symbolic. It is the centre of love, connection, and empathy. In Reiki and other energy healing practices, the heart’s energy is central to our spiritual and emotional well-being.
Anahata: The Heart Chakra
The Anahata Chakra is located at the centre of the chest, near the physical heart. Its Sanskrit name, “Anahata,” means “unstruck” or “unhurt,” symbolising a pure, untapped, and infinite source of love.
An open Anahata Chakra allows:
- Compassion for ourselves and others
- Forgiveness without resentment
- Healthy emotional expression
- Connection and intimacy
When the Anahata is out of balance, we may notice:
- Difficulty forming deep connections
- Emotional numbness or excessive sensitivity
- Holding grudges or fear of vulnerability
- Physical symptoms like heartburn, upper back pain, or respiratory issues
The heart chakra is about balance. It is the middle point of the seven main chakras, linking our grounded, physical experience with our spiritual awareness.
Signs Your Heart Chakra Is Closed or Blocked
We often think that the heart can only “break” from major life events, but it can be subtly blocked by everyday stress, judgement, and self-criticism. Here are signs your Anahata may need attention:
- Emotional Detachment: Difficulty feeling or expressing emotions, especially love or empathy.
- Fear of Intimacy: Avoiding close relationships or keeping people at a distance.
- Over-Attachment: Becoming overly dependent on others for happiness or approval.
- Physical Tension: Tightness in the chest, shoulders, or back.
- Self-Criticism: Inability to forgive yourself or accept your imperfections.
Ways to Open and Balance Your Heart
The beautiful thing about the heart is its resilience. With intention and gentle practice, we can restore its flow. Here are ways to nurture and open your heart:
1. Practice Self-Love
Before we can fully love others, we must love ourselves. This doesn’t mean ego or arrogance; it means acceptance, compassion, and presence. Daily affirmations like “I am worthy of love” or “I am enough exactly as I am” can be surprisingly powerful.
2. Forgiveness Practices
Holding onto anger or resentment blocks love. Forgiveness isn’t about condoning behaviour; it’s about freeing yourself from emotional chains. Journaling, meditation, or Reiki energy work can support this release.
3. Heart-Centred Meditation
Sit quietly, place your hands over your heart, and breathe into the chest. Visualise a green or pink light expanding from your heart, filling your body, and extending into the world. Imagine sending love to yourself, loved ones, and even strangers.
4. Reiki Healing
Reiki can help balance the heart chakra by removing energy blockages and restoring the flow of love. Even self-Reiki, placing your hands on the chest and setting the intention to heal and open your heart, can be transformative.
5. Yoga for the Heart
Heart-opening poses in yoga, such as Camel Pose (Ustrasana), Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana), and Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana), stretch the chest, shoulders, and upper back, allowing physical and energetic openness.
6. Gratitude Practice
Gratitude and love are deeply linked. Keeping a daily gratitude journal or taking a moment each day to appreciate small acts of kindness trains your heart to notice and generate love.
7. Connecting With Nature
Spending time in nature, watching the sky, feeling the earth beneath your feet, or listening to the ocean, can awaken our capacity for awe, wonder, and unconditional love.
8. Ceremonial Cacao
Cacao is not just a delicious treat! It’s a heart-opening plant medicine. The active compounds in ceremonial cacao, such as theobromine, support blood flow, energy, and emotional openness. Drinking cacao intentionally, with presence and gratitude, can create a meditative state that supports heart chakra activation.
The Importance of Being Yourself
The most important thing to remember is to be you. No amount of meditation, yoga, or cacao ceremony can replace authenticity. The heart thrives on truth. Loving others and yourself requires showing up as your real self, without masks or pretences.
When we are authentic, love flows naturally. When we deny our truth or conform to expectations, our heart contracts. Being yourself is an act of courage and self-love, and it naturally opens the Anahata.
Fun Facts About the Heart
- The heart generates its own electromagnetic field, the strongest in the body, which can be detected several feet away.
- Your heart’s rhythm can synchronise with your emotional state and practices like deep breathing and meditation create a harmonious heartbeat.
- Heart disease is the leading cause of death globally, making heart care essential not only emotionally but physically.
- Acts of kindness and love increase oxytocin, which protects the heart and boosts well-being.
Daily Heart-Opening Rituals
You can cultivate a loving heart every day with simple rituals:
- Morning gratitude for your heart and its life-giving energy.
- Smiling at strangers and sending silent love to those around you.
- Practicing a five-minute self-Reiki session, focusing on the heart.
- Drinking a cup of ceremonial cacao mindfully, appreciating its warmth and energy.
- Ending the day reflecting on moments of love you gave or received.
Heart Health and Energy Balance
Balancing the heart is both physical and energetic. Cardiovascular health, emotional resilience, and spiritual openness all intertwine. By honouring the heart with care, meditation, movement, and intention, we cultivate a life filled with love, connection, and joy.
The human heart is an extraordinary organ physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In Reiki, the Anahata is the centre of compassion, love, and healing. It asks us to show up as our authentic selves, to forgive, to open, and to trust in love’s transformative power.
I offer cacao ceremonies, Reiki, and yoga to help open the heart, create balance, and reconnect you to your true capacity to love. Each practice supports a deepening of self-awareness, self-love, and connection with others, reminding us that the heart is not just a muscle, but a gateway to living fully, freely, and with boundless love.
