Can Cacao Lower Cortisol? A Deeper, More Personal Look Through Ceremony
When people arrive at a cacao ceremony with I AM BEING, they are not just coming for cacao. They are arriving with something. Together, we are all arriving with something. That’s a beautiful thought in itself no? A time where we come together, with something.
Sometimes it is stress that has been quietly building for months. Sometimes it is burnout that has gone unnoticed until the body begins to speak louder than the mind. Sometimes it is a feeling that something is not quite right, even if there are no words for it yet. Sometimes it’s something a lot more serious, that needs gentle care. And sometimes, it is simply a desire to feel more connected. To feel something again. To come back to themselves.
Before any cacao is prepared, before anything is poured, there is always a pause and we all meet each other where you are individually. Not with words, but with love.
Because cacao is not just something you drink. It is something you experience. And more than that, it is something that meets you differently depending on what you need. She knows what to do. That’s not up to us to tell her, we just need to let her in and trust.
Cortisol is often spoken about as the body’s stress hormone. It plays an important role in keeping us alert and responsive, helping us navigate moments that require energy and attention. In many ways, it is essential. But the way many of us are living means that cortisol does not get the chance to settle.
It lingers…
Days become full, minds stay active, and the body rarely drops into rest. Over time, this can begin to feel like a constant underlying tension. A sense of always being switched on. Always holding something. And this is often the point where people begin to look for something different. Not just relief, but a reset.
Ceremonial cacao, in its purest form, offers something gentle yet powerful. It contains compounds that support the body and mind in coming back into balance. There is something about the way cacao works that does not force change, but instead creates space for it.
Research suggests that cacao may support how the body responds to stress, with some indication that it can help regulate cortisol levels over time. But what feels just as important as the science is what happens in the experience itself. Because cacao is not just about what is happening chemically. It is about what is happening within you.
There is a common misconception that cacao is simply a drink. Something you prepare, consume, and move on from. But cacao does not work that way. Or at least, not in the way it is intended to.
Cacao is a practice. And without the right guidance, its depth can easily be missed. And to let you know, this is one of my biggest concerns when it comes to people holding space with Cacao, without truly knowing or experiencing how to work with the cacao spirit.
I often meet people who have tried cacao before and felt very little. And it is rarely because the cacao was not working. It is usually because there was no space to meet it. No understanding of how to work with it. No awareness of what it was opening.
This is why working with someone who understands this medicine is so important.
When you step into a cacao ceremony in London with I AM BEING, the experience begins with you. Your energy, your state, what you are carrying. There is no assumption, no fixed expectation. Just a space that allows you to arrive fully.
From there, cacao is introduced slowly and intentionally. Not as something to consume, but as something to sit with.
As the body begins to soften, something shifts. The nervous system starts to settle. The constant edge of stress begins to ease. Not because anything has been forced, but because there is finally space for the body to feel safe.
And when the body feels safe, cortisol begins to regulate naturally. This is where cacao supports the process. Not by removing stress, but by changing your relationship to it.
Instead of being inside the overwhelm, there is space to observe it. Instead of reacting automatically, there is a moment to pause. Instead of disconnecting, there is a gentle return to the body.
This is often the first shift people notice. Not that everything disappears, but that everything feels different.
This is why cacao should not simply be drunk. Because when it is approached without awareness, without intention, and without understanding, so much of its depth is lost.
Cacao opens something and learning how to meet that opening is where the work truly begins.
This is also why so many people feel called to go deeper after experiencing it in this way.
What begins as a session often becomes a practice. A way of checking in. A way of slowing down. A way of returning to self.
And for some, it becomes something more. A desire to understand it fully. To hold it for others. To work with it in a way that is safe, intentional, and grounded.
This is where the Cacao Practitioner Training comes in. This training is not just about learning what cacao is. It is about learning how to listen to it. How to hold space with it. How to understand what is happening beneath the surface.
Whether this is something you are exploring for your own personal connection, to share with friends, or as part of your work in the wellness space, the training meets you where you are.
Because cacao is not just something you offer. It is something you learn to work with.
And when held with care, it becomes a powerful tool for supporting others in finding balance, resetting, and ultimately, coming back to themselves.
There is something incredibly grounding about this work. It does not rush. It does not force. It does not overwhelm. It simply invites.
Whether you are joining a cacao ceremony in London, beginning to explore cacao for yourself, or feeling called to learn more deeply, the starting point is always the same.
You arrive as you are. And from there, something begins to shift. Come visit me soon please.
Being,
Gizelle Renee Xx
