5 Powerful Breathwork Techniques to De-Stress and Reconnect | I AM BEING

From demanding work schedules to constant digital noise, our nervous systems rarely get the rest they deserve. But there’s a powerful, natural way to restore calm and reconnect with yourself, your breath.

At I AM BEING, we offer breathwork classes, yoga in London, Reiki, cacao ceremonies, and sound baths to help people find balance in mind, body, and spirit. Breathwork is one of the simplest yet most profound practices you can bring into your daily life to manage stress, release tension, and deepen your connection to the present moment.

Here are five powerful breathwork techniques that you can try at home or in one of our London sessions.

1. Box Breathing (Four-Square Breathing)

Best for: anxiety relief, clarity, and balance.

Box breathing is simple, structured, and effective. It’s often used by athletes and high-performers to regulate stress and remain focused.

How to practise:

  • Inhale through your nose for 4 counts.
  • Hold your breath for 4 counts.
  • Exhale slowly through your mouth for 4 counts.
  • Hold again for 4 counts.

Repeat this cycle 4–6 times. This technique helps calm the nervous system and can be practised anywhere — from your desk at work to the tube in London.

2. Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing)

Best for: energy balance, grounding, and mental clarity.

This yogic pranayama practice balances the left and right hemispheres of the brain, making it perfect before meditation, yoga, or a sound bath.

How to practise:

  1. Sit comfortably with your spine tall.
  2. Close your right nostril with your thumb and inhale through the left.
  3. Close the left nostril with your ring finger, pause briefly, then exhale through the right.
  4. Inhale through the right, close it, exhale through the left.

Repeat for 5–10 rounds. This is a favourite in yoga classes at I AM BEING in London for bringing harmony and focus.

3. Ocean Breath (Ujjayi Pranayama)

Best for: soothing the nervous system and enhancing meditation.

Known as the “ocean breath,” Ujjayi uses a soft throat constriction to create a calming sound like waves.

How to practise:

  • Inhale through your nose.
  • Exhale through your nose while gently constricting your throat, creating a soft oceanic sound.
  • Continue slowly and steadily.

This breath is often integrated into yoga sessions, helping to deepen postures and keep your mind anchored.

4. The 4-7-8 Breath

Best for: better sleep, calming a racing mind. I LOVE this one.

Created by Dr Andrew Weil, this practice quickly reduces stress and supports rest.

How to practise:

  • Inhale through your nose for 4 counts.
  • Hold for 7 counts.
  • Exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 counts.

Try 4 cycles before bed to invite deep rest. Many of our I AM BEING community members in London use this to wind down after a long day.

5. Breath of Fire (Kapalabhati)

Best for: energy, clearing mental fog, and releasing tension.

This invigorating practice is often taught in kundalini yoga and helps to wake up body and mind.

How to practise:

  • Take a gentle inhale, then begin short, sharp exhales through the nose.
  • Let the inhale happen naturally as your belly pumps with each exhale.

Start with 30 seconds, increasing gradually. You’ll feel lighter, more awake, and ready for the day.
